Foundations of Asana is designed to help anyone understand the basic powerful principles of Yoga, including breathing practices, Asana postures, anatomy, undistracted focusing, and meditation. Each class will cover a particular aspect of movement (for example forward bending), and examine the core benefits and techniques for execution in an intelligent, personalized manner. A student will learn some foundational sun salutations, and practices to do at home so they can deepen their understanding of how and why we practice yoga. Nina Be (ERYT500) teaches this class. Often there will be other teachers in the room as well, allowing space for each individuals needs, with personalized guidance. Open to all levels.
The Magic Dozen: Sundays, 9-10.30am
Yoga therapist Nina Be will guide this 3 part practice to open the Bodymind, through the principles of Sthira (steadiness) and Sukha (ease).
The first part begins with calming the nervous system out of stress and reactivity, through integrating and grounding yoga.
The second part will be a guided mindful yoga practice of the the 12 essential MBC Yoga postures that harness the ancient techniques of the eight limbs of yoga, to facilitate optimal breathing, body relaxation and stopping the busy mind. The students are invited to participate at their own level of need. The 12 essential postures are Savasana, Bakasana, Tadasana, Uttanasana, Ashva Sanchalanasana, Phalakasana, Adho Mukha Svasana, Sirsasana, Salamba Sarvangasana, Urdhva Dhanurasana (with variations), Eka Pada Kapotasana & Matsyendrasana.
For the third and final (30 minute) part of class, students are invited to find a comfortable way to lay on the ground or sit on the floor. This section includes a Yoga Nidra with singing bowls. Sometimes called a ‘sound bath’, these sessions are supported by the soothing vibrations of ancient metal and crystal singing bowls, to relax different aspects of a person that may be stressed, or blocking access to potential range of motion and comfort.
Whether you are a seasoned athlete, recovering from an injury or surgery, or have recently decided it's time to bump the self-care routine up a notch, this open level class will be highly supportive.

mbcYoga backbending:: creating courage out of fear
sunday march 11, 2018 (2-4pm)
MBCYoga backbending practices can be the most powerfully healing of asanas, but there can be so much fear or pain that gets in the way…
Did you know that backbending is a form of mental focus that we call courage?
Yes, all MBCYoga fundamentals are built on our ability to stay focused. The cumulative effect is called ‘miracles’!
The MindBody Centering Yoga method for approaching anything that feels inaccessible is through information and experience. We want to be ‘informed’ about ourselves, and our history is often in our ‘back’, what has come before…what is behind us. Get it?
During this workshop, we will approach our pinnacle poses by breaking down every aspect of the pose, physically, mentally, neurologically and developmentally so that we can build the pose with intelligence and presence. We slowly acclimate the nervous system out of fight or flight responses that sabotage our ability to focus and be calm. As we learn how to move away from our individual sympathetic response, into a parasympathetic state of calm, the poses arrive with patience and breath.
During this workshop we will examine the various aspects of our foundation, the central column of the spine and all of the various ways it moves or doesn't move.
Positioning and push through the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, toes, feet, ankles and legs create more and more space. We will problem solve how to develop strength so that any pain is resolved.
As we fearlessly allow the whole HEART to motor opening the whole body the poses arrive! This enjoyable and inspiring ability will create pain free longevity and fearlessness for years to come!
**You must have a physical yoga practice at least 3 times a week for a year to enter this work safely.
mbcy restorative yoga nidra:: releasing tension with support
sunday march 25, 2018 (2-4pm)
Every event of our lives leaves an impression on the mind/body; every sight, smell, sound and every thought . This constant input is impossible to process, so what is not processed is stored in the body. Eventually these stored memories build up and create tension and block energetic ‘flow’ in the body/mind. These tension ‘blockades’ can feel like mental, physical or emotional resistance, isolation, tightness, back pain, fatigue, agitation, exhaustion, anxiety, depression, numbness and flight.
These MBCY Restorative Yoga Nidra techniques release tension and train the mind to focus on slowing the breath so that the body can begin to release this tension to develop mindful awareness for modern times, with great benefit for thousands of persons.
In this Restorative Yoga Nidra Workshop, we will explore practical ways to support awareness in the present moment with props, calming singing bowl tones, language and hands on assists. All of these MBCY Restorative techniques have been researched to enhance quality of life by supporting the nervous system to re-set into a calm container that can hold more energy and renew health.
MBCYoga Inversion practices can be the most health promoting of asanas, but there can be so much fear that gets in the way…
